Trauma and Attachment Theory Informed Education

The experience of trauma and disrupted attachment are alarmingly prevalent in the lives of children in Australia. Adverse or traumatic childhood experiences can include parental separation and divorce, parental substance abuse or mental health difficulties, exposure to domestic violence or the experience of bullying, neglect or abuse. Such experiences have a profound impact on the way children perceive themselves, others and the world around them. They have implications for a child’s health, development, emotions, behaviour and relationships and can significantly undermine their capacity to engage and succeed at school.
Teachers who understand the effects of trauma on children’s education, who are able to develop teaching practices to help them, and who are able to participate actively and collaboratively in the systems designed to support traumatised children will not only improve their educational outcomes but will assist in their healing and recovery (Calmer Classrooms 2007).

At the centre of this professional learning is a commitment to do our best for
all students and not just those who exhibit trauma and attachment challenges.

Managing Challenging Behaviours - Blended Learning Course

In 2013 DET released the Managing Challenging Behaviours: Blended Learning Course, developed in partnership with the University of Melbourne. The course was designed to support teachers to meet the diverse needs of their students and limit the incidence and impact of complex behaviours in the classroom. The course provided teachers with:
- a theoretical understanding of the causes and triggers of complex and challenging behaviours

- skills and knowledge to maintain safe, orderly and inclusive environments for meaningful learning.
A one day train-the-trainer style workshop will support school leaders and allied health professionals to deliver the BL Course to their school staff. Course participants will become a school's MCB Champion and will be trained to present the information effectively, respond to questions and lead online discussions and activities that reinforce learning. MCB Champions will be given free and unlimited access to the BL Course and its resources.
